Curriculum Vitae:

Biographical Statement

Since earning her Ph.D. at the University of Virginia in 2000, Dr. Walpole's scholarship has focused on translating complex research into practical classroom solutions. Her Bookworms (K-5) and Open Up Resources (6-8) programs represent a paradigm shift in research-informed curriculum design, providing structured, systematic instruction, authentic texts, and an integrated approach to learning foundational skills and comprehension. Recent efficacy studies, including a 2024 SSR evaluation of her soleauthored Bookworms, confirm the success of this approach.

Her publications, including 15 books, 22 book chapters, and over 50 articles (most in top tier journals), are essential resources for educators nationwide. Her LRA peers have honored her scholarship with the 2007 Early Career Scholar Award and the 2024 P.D. Pearson Scholarly Influence Award, the latter for the influential 2017 book that she and Michael McKenna published, elaborating their small-group integrated skills model.

She also excels at teaching and mentoring, chairing 23 doctoral and countless MA committees and earning collegial respect via the University of Delaware’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the ILA Jerry Johns Outstanding Teacher Educator Award. She has designed and provided professional development for federally funded state and regional projects, including the Reading Excellence Act, Reading First, and Striving Readers. Currently, her work supports differentiated instruction within RtI initiatives and PK-12 State Literacy Plans.
