Biographical Statement
As the Jean Adamson Stanley Professor in Literacy at Purdue University, Dr. Kuhn is best known for her foundational work in understanding and developing reading fluency. Her portfolio includes five influential books, 40+ peer-reviewed articles, and more than 50 book chapters strategically placed in prestigious outlets, RRQ, JEdPsy, and the Oxford Handbook of Educational Psychology among them. The frequent reprinting of her articles in foundational collections (e.g., Theoretical Models and Processes) and their extensive citation (over 8200) attest to their enduring influence. She has advanced our knowledge of how to teach and assess fluency in nuanced ways that go beyond simplistic indices of reading speed.
She has implemented many grants, including federal grants evaluating FORI and implementing evidence-based reading research and a Spencer grant considering the relationship between fluency and challenging social studies text.
Honors include LRA’s Early Career Achievement Award, appointment as a member of the Literacy Research Panel for ILA, and election to the LRA Board of Directors. She is currently the moderator for thereadingforum.com, a website that exemplifies her commitment to making research accessible to stakeholders. As a scholar at Rutgers, Boston University, and Purdue, she has mentored countless literacy scholars and leaders, who extend her legacy to a new generation.
