Biographical Statement

Richard “Rick” Beach has made significant contributions to the field of literacy research through various leadership roles and recognition for his work. He served as lead editor of annual annotated research bibliographies for Research in the Teaching of English from 2003– 2012. Additionally, he held prominent positions such as Chair of the Assembly on Research (NCTE), President of the National Conference on Research in English, Chair of the Board of Trustees for The Research Foundation (NCTE), and President of the Literacy Research Association (LRA).

His work with Alan Purves at the University of Illinois focused on his interest in literary response theory, which led to his annual reviews of research in English, and his reputation as the best read literacy educator in the field of English Education. His research contributed to our understanding of how students' beliefs and attitudes shaped their responses to literature, emphasizing the importance of social interactions and collaborative meaning-making. Beach also promoted the integration of sociocultural, critical discourse analysis, and genre theory in literacy research and advocated for the use of critical inquiry methods in teaching. He advocated for the use of digital tools in literacy instruction, including blogs, wikis, and apps. He emphasized critical media literacy to analyze media agendas and misinformation. He received the John J. Gumperz Memorial Award for his lifetime contributions to literacy research. In short, Professor Beach has made a lifelong commitment to secondary education by advancing literacy research, teaching practices, and critical inquiry.
